Video installation, variable dimensions, 8 min in loop, 2018
Courtesy of Diep~haven : cross – channel festival of contemporary art
This video installation emerged through collaboration with Diep-Haven, a cross-channel festival celebrating contemporary creation. (Dieppe, France and Newhaven, England )Commissioned by the Musée-château de Dieppe, the exhibition serves as a tribute to Salomon de Caus, an innovator credited with pioneering hydraulic engineering.
My inspiration stems from the kinetic force of ocean waves, a fascination that deeply resonated with de Caus and ignited his initial explorations. I embarked on an exploration of his research findings, interweaving them with concepts of physical motion and the dynamics of inter-human connections—be it the ebb and flow of memories or the surges of emotions. Within my video installation, a central narrative thread is woven around a quote from de Caus’ ‘The Reasons of Moving Forces’: ‘Parts of the elements come together, for a time, then each returned in its place.’ This principle statement infuses my work with its core essence.
To further enhance my piece, I reimagined de Caus’ fountain design and brought it to life through a 3D print. This enigmatic object serves as a pivotal element within my film, generating energy that propels the ebb and flow between humanity and its surroundings.
“La question des forces merveilleuses de la nature domptée ou non, une vidéo de Wu Ting Chia sur la curiosité du danger et le danger de la curiosité à s’éloigner des questions ordinaires ; ce faisant il s’évertue à explorer un rêve de hiéroglyphes inexplicables et au final à jouer avec les clefs. Paysage mental composé de secousses violentes et de fêlures rentrées, un poème en images brassées tout comme la houle un jour de tempête.”
